A message from Tommy Ferguson, Camp Director

Since 1947, Triple S Camp has taken children from our neighborhood, from our state, as well as a number of other states. For the past 10 years, I have been fortunate enough to direct South Side Settlement's Triple S Camp. I have been involved with this program for 30 years. I began as a camper in 1969. Our goals are to give campers an opportunity to experience outdoor life in a natural residential setting... To expose campers to democratic living and responsibility, and to provide each camper with a sense of self as well as others.

Located in the hills around Sugar Grove, Ohio, Triple S Camp has been a major component to South Side Settlement's program. The land it is on is wooded, with natural beauty and rustic hiking trails. Triple S Camp currently has over 450 campers a year ranging in age from toddlers to young adults.

Camp sessions include elementary ages and Teen Camp. Camp activities included not only swimming, hiking, crafts and recreational sports, but also discussions and explorations of social and environmental concerns. Travel, multi-cultural experience, physical work and peer group confrontation under the guidance of a qualified and experienced staff are part of our activities.

We believe in challenging children to experience things they many not previously have experienced, including long distance walks, ethnic and international cultures, community-building, group problem solving, and a philosophy which seeks alternatives to punishment.

For many children, camp provides their only experience outside of the routine of their urban neighborhood. For all who attend, camp provides and opportunity for new experiences and a chance to interact and share.
