South Side Settlement, established in 1899, is a non-profit social agency in Columbus, Ohio supported by United Way and the United Methodist Church among other funders. The Settlement mission is to create a diverse community of culture and concern in a society rooted in social and economic justice. Direct service and social action programs for all ages address community needs. South Side Settlement has an annual budget of $1 million and 15 full time and 15 part time/camp employees. Programs for youth include after school, award winning cooperative child care and residential summer camp. Adults participate in social and action groups focused on education, housing, employment and health. Social work services are provided. The arts are celebrated. The Settlement is perceived as the hub of the community, recognized for its integrity and effective programs.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director reports to an independently appointed Board of Directors and ensures that the Board is fully informed, and that the agency adheres to applicable laws and regulations. In partnership with the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for leadership, planning and management and for creating an atmosphere in the organization where South Side Settlement values are understood by all.
- Leads operations to achieve excellence and provides accountability for programs
- Responsible for agency fundraising and development
- Builds strong relationships with the immediate neighborhood and advocates for the South Side with funders, government, business, civic leaders and the press; networks and builds partnerships for the common good of the community
- Does strategic planning for program development and funding
- Directs and coaches staff. Builds strong relationships and inspires staff. Creates a work culture that retains staff by emphasizing excellence, trust and staff development. Holds staff meetings regularly to ensure communication, conflict resolution and team building
- Supervises Associate Director who operates summer camp and retreat facility
- Responsible for developing and presenting an annual budget to the Board and for operating the agency within the budget. Oversees daily fiscal operation and ensures that fiscal and contractual records are maintained for funders and annual audits
Qualifications
- Proven track record of managing a human service organization and fundraising; minimum five years management experience in nonprofit
- Believes deeply in the mission and philosophy of South Side Settlement; has knowledge of human behavior and social policy; passionate about meeting human needs and social reform; able to engage people from all backgrounds
- Has strong writing and speaking skills, computer literate
- College degree; MSW, MPA or human services field a plus
